Finishing Friday and now Saturday

remember when I said I had a rock leave a chip in my windshield? Well, yesterday on Friday, we stopped for a salad at Wendy's in Evanston WY.  We decided just to eat in the car because the altitude was kicking dad's butt all along the route. Well, there was a Jiffy Lube next to Wendy's so I pulled up and asked the tech if they repaired chips in windshields and they do! So I pulled into bay 3 and dad and I ate our salad with the esscence of gasoline and oil in the air while waiting for the manger to finish in the pit on the vehicle in bay 2. Apparently he's the only one who can do windshield repair. His name is Joe and he was very nice, but as much as he tried, he couldn't completely make the chip disappear, but it's much better.  He felt so bad that he didn't even charge me! He said he appreciated us stopping by and trusting him. He said he just made it customer appreciation day!
We then moved on and went into beautiful Utah. Just before going into Nevada though, there it was...the exit for Bonneville Salt Flats Raceway! Dad had talked about wanting to see this for some time and there we were. So of course we took the exit!  We drove a couple of miles with salt flats on both sides of the 2 lane road and we came across a strange sight. A van was stopped on the side of the road with a trampoline set up about 20-30 feet in on the salt with a young lady in a wedding dress jumping on the trampoline and a young man taking photos. I stopped in the middle of the road (we saw not more than 3 or 4 vehicles the whole time we were there), and this lady comes to the window of my car and explains: the photographer is her 'very talented' 16 year old son who sees the vision and then must make it happen. So his vision was to capture the young lady as though she's floating in air. (Didn't ask about the wedding dress). The girl is a family friend and they drove in from Nebraska for this photo shoot.  There are signs along the route not to drive on the salt flats this time of year because it's like driving in mud...or getting stuck in mud, which happened to this group earlier in the day so said the mom. But they were having a good time and fulfilling a dream just like we were doing for dad! The gift shop clerk (yes we got dad a tee shirt) said we need to come back in August when it's really a happening place!  Dad would love to go back and see the races and I think the whole process and history is very interesting!

We then continued our journey until we reached Elko, NV where we stayed last night (Friday night) at the Red Lion hotel and casino. Not to be outdone by Mark, Francine, Maureen and Ray, we had all you can eat seafood buffet including crab legs!  It's a nice place that took a few nickels from both dad and I but it was fun. Dad slept well but was anxious to leave this morning to get to a lower altitude and a warmer temperature. It was 30 degrees when we left and we were at about 6500 feet.

By the way, the drive through Salt Lake City was great! It's such a beautiful setting with the snow capped mountains surrounding the city. It's very clean and crisp! We were only able to see the southernmost tip of the Great Salt Lake, but it's massive and carries on for miles and miles. We saw the Morton salt factory and another rock salt factory along the way.
