Dad, Jeanne and I then headed for Julian, CA, which is an official California Historical Landmark. Julian sits in the mountains in northern San Diego County with the hallmark of Julian being apple pie. It's the acidic sandy soil, precipitation and overall climate that makes it the ideal apple growing region. Although the town boasts of only about 1500 residents, it is accessible from three major roads and hosts many festivals throughout the year. The main employment sectors in Julian are tourism and agriculture, with the emphasis on apples.
We stopped at The Julian Pie Company for, of course, a piece of apple pie. Dad got his with vanilla ice cream Jeanne had hers with caramel and mine was with a crumble top. OMG...the best pie ever! And yes, we brought one home for the breakfast, lunch and dinner tomorrow! Although we didn't drive on any dirt roads, we did find a way back on roads none of us had ever been on. It was a beautiful drive in and out of the clouds and drizzle and then into sunshine as we made our way back to Murrieta. On the roads of our travels, dad was thrilled that we were able to drive alongside two gorgeous lakes, Lake Cuyamaca which dates back to the 1870's and Lake Henshaw constructed in the 1920's.
